D&T

Design Technology is part of the STEM group of subjects and links creative skills with scientific enquiry. In school, children investigate existing designs, create an improved design, make the product and then evaluate it. 

For the summer term, children at Tithe Farm would have been studying the Design Technology subjects in the table below. It is quite easy to do these projects at home, with what you have available to you. Remember, the research and evaluation are as improtant as the making!

Seaside
Puppets and a puppet show

Research Punch an Judy.

Make a glove puppet that could be a character in Punch and Judy.

Create a small puppet show with your puppet.

 

Rotation Year 2

The Garden Party
Food tasting & making

Design and make food for a picnic. Create fillings for sandwiches.

Grow a vegetable and use it to make something tasty to eat.

Year 3

Design and make a photo frame

Look at differnt types of picture frames. Design a frame for a picture of your friends or family. Make sure it is freestanding.

Decorate the frame in  a style you like.

Look at the materials you can use, particularly recyced materials.

Year 4

Greeks – modern and ancient
Food / menus / Olympics / diet

Taste greek food, including feta cheese, pitta bread and dips.

Create your own dip. What are the characteristics of a dip? How can yuo make yours really delicious? Test it out on your family.

Design a game that can be played at the Olympics. Create a presentation to the Olympic Committee explaining how your game works and why it should be at the Olympics.

Year 5

Re-cycled fashion show

Using recycled materials, including upcycling exisiting clothes, plastics and anythng you can find. Create a bag, dress, top, shoes - you will need to explore the best way to join your materials!

Year 6

Set costume and design

Watch Joesph and his Technicoloured Dreamcoat (andrew Lloyd Webber) and design his coat. Think about the materials you would use, how you would join the materials and how you would combine colours, textures and patterns. Your design drawings need to be detailed and labelled with types of fabric, details of joins, reasons for choices.
