Topics: "Old Macdonald Had a Farm" & "Vehicles and Transport"

We are excited to share our fun-filled learning themes for Summer 1 at nursery! This term, the AM group will be focusing on Farm Animals with the theme "Old Macdonald Had a Farm", and the PM group will be exploring Vehicles and Transport. Below, you’ll find an overview of the activities and experiences that your child will be engaging in.

AM Group – Old Macdonald Had a Farm

Our AM group will be having fun learning about farm animals through songs, stories, and hands-on activities. We will explore farm life, the animals that live on the farm, and discover where food comes from.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development

  • Learning about family and friendship

  • Working together in team activities

  • Talking about healthy eating and how to be a good friend

Mathematics

  • Sorting animals by numbers and sizes

  • Counting through fun songs like "5 Little Ducks"

  • Matching animals to their numbers and sorting by size (big, middle, small)

Communication & Language

  • Enjoying stories like "Squash and a Squeeze" and "The Three Billy Goats Gruff"

  • Retelling and sequencing stories

  • Learning new farm-related vocabulary

Literacy

  • Singing and acting out "Old Macdonald Had a Farm"

  • Story sequencing and retelling farm tales

  • Introducing early phonics skills using farm-themed books

  • Learning Set 1 RWI Phonics sounds

Physical Development

  • Farm animal footprints in dough

  • Moving like different animals and exploring their gross motor skills

  • Engaging in hands-on activities like making paper plate ducks and goat masks

Expressive Arts & Design

  • Creating farm animal collages and handprint art

  • Making goat masks, duck prints, and more fun crafts

  • Creative play in a farmyard sensory tray with shaving foam

PM Group – Vehicles and Transport

In our PM group, we will be exploring the world of vehicles and transportation. The children will learn about different kinds of vehicles, their uses, and how people travel in different ways.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development

  • Talking about vehicles children have been on, like cars and buses

  • Learning about friendship and how to use calm me time

  • Talking about what it means to be kind and helpful when playing with others

Mathematics

  • Sorting cars and buses by colour and size

  • Counting the train passengers and bus stops

  • Playing fun games like "The Wheels on the Bus" with matching activities

Communication & Language

  • Talking about where vehicles go and who drives them

  • Singing songs like "Wheels on the Bus" and "Down by the Station"

  • Role-play activities such as driving cars or flying planes with friends

Literacy

  • Enjoying transportation-related books like "The Wheels on the Bus"

  • Singing songs and exploring the language of vehicles

  • Developing writing skills by making their own transport-themed stories

Physical Development

  • Mark making with cars on tuff trays

  • Moving around using vehicles like trains and boats

  • Exploring fine motor skills by making playdough cars and cutting road shapes

Expressive Arts & Design

  • Making junk art vehicles from recycled materials

  • Building train tracks and bus stations with different materials

  • Creating aeroplane art with lollipop sticks and silhouettes

  • 22nd April: Inset Day – Nursery closed

  • 5th May: Bank Holiday Monday – Nursery closed
